Jo-Vaughn Virginie Scott, better known as, Joey Bada$$, is a Brooklyn-born rapper, actor, and a founding member of Pro Era. Stylistically, the rapper has been compared to Big L and Nas, and he lists his influences as Nas, Tupac, Black Thought, MF DOOM, J Dilla, Andre 3000, Jay-Z, and The Notorious B.I.G.
Joey Bada$$ first started making waves in 2010 with his freestyle video upload to Youtube that was picked up and shared on World Star Hip Hop. The video led to his discovery by Jonny Shipes of Cinematic Music Group, who became his manager. In 2012, Joey Bada$$ released his debut solo mixtape, 1999, which was nominated for mixtape of the year by both B.E.T. and Versed. The mixtape drew extensive praise for its golden-age sound and further fueled the growing hype around the then-teenage rapper. Later that year, he released Rejex, a 14-track mixtape that included the tracks that didn’t make it to 1999.
Joey Bada$$ followed up 1999 with his second mixtape, Summer Knights, in 2013. That same year, he released Summer Knights EP, which included four tracks from the mixtape plus three new ones. The E.P. debuted at number 48 on the U.S. Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. A year later, he appeared as an actor in No Regrets, in which he played himself in the quasi-autobiographical short film.
By 2015, Joey Bada$$ began reaching new heights. In January of 2015, he performed live on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and a week later, on his 20th birthday, he dropped his first studio album, B4.Da.$$. A year later, he released Devastated, which hit number 25 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles and was later certified gold by the RIAA. That same year he landed a recurring role on season two of Mr. Robot in 2016.
2017 saw the launch of his latest second studio album, All-Amerikkkan Bada$$, which included Devasted. After a nearly five-year solo album hiatus, Joey Bada$$ announced in January 2022 that his third studio album would be dropping later in the year. Since then, he released his newest single, Head High, as his audience eagerly awaits the new album.
